Syracuse guard Scoop Jardine has been named the nation's sixth man of the year by Sporting News. Jardine has helped the Orange to a 28-3 record, the BIG EAST Conference regular-season championship, and the top seed in the BIG EAST Tournament.
To qualify for the award, the player must not rank in the top five on his team in minutes played.
Jardine has played in all 31 games for the Orange, each in a reserve role. He has averaged 8.5 points, 2.1 rebonds and 4.5 assists per game. He has averaged 22.0 minutes per game, the sixth-best mark on the team.
In his most recent outing, a Saturday loss at Louisville, Jardine had 20 points and six assists without committing a turnover. He had a season-high 22 points earlier in the season when SU defeated California in the 2K Sports Classic, a tournament won by the Orange.
Syracuse is 14-1 this season when Jardine has at least five assists.
After participating as a freshman, Jardine missed last season with an injury and earned a medical redshirt.
The Orange play the winner of USF vs. Georgetown on Thursday at 12 noon in Madison Square Gardedn.
